Spoleto
A gem of a town in the heart of Umbria, Spoleto is just a 2 hour drive from Rome and steeped in art, charm and relaxation. The majestic Rocca Albornoziana fortress dominates the city and is a good place to start your visit. Piazza del Duomo is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses frescoes by Pinturicchio andFilippo Lippi. And don’t forget to stop in at the 1st century AD Teatro Romano, which is still today an important performance venue. The Two Worlds Festival, an international event celebrating music, dance and theatre, takes place in Spoleto every summer and is not to be missed!

Orvieto and Bagnoregio
At the top of a massive tuff outcrop that rises in the Umbrian countryside is the lovely, romantic town of Orvieto. Its beautiful cathedral, one of Italy’s most spectacular examples of Gothic architecture, and the fascinating underground city made up of a labyrinth of ancient grottoes steeped in history and of vast archaeological importance, are some of the main attractions. If you would like to add a touch of magic to your trip, go explore one of Italy’s loveliest villages: Civita di Bagnoregio, a gem that seems to hang suspended between the sky and the earth, a place no car can reach, and where visitors have to walk over a long bridge to reach the entrance gate of this tiny, uncontaminated marvel from the past.

Montecassino and Terracina
