The Splendide Shamba is the farm that the Hotel Splendide Royal has built in Langobaya, a small village nearby Malindi, in Kenya.
The Shamba (meaning ”farm”, in Swahili) extends over an area of 40 hectares. Fruit and vegetables are being harvested, among which tomatoes, cassava (a local edible root), passion fruit, mango and papaya, which nurture the local inhabitants by providing them with a healthy diet. In addition, the Shamba farm hundreds of chickens and goats as well as milk cows, the latter being particularly important for child nutrition.
The remaining production of milk and vegetables is sold at the local market. This will guarantee the native community a source of revenue and self-sufficiency.
Moreover, when the Splendide Shamba project will be finished, the farm will be totally autonomous and the Hotel Splendide Royal will be able to focus on a new project.
To ensure that the goals were being achieved, the Splendide collaborated with “Karibuni”, a non-profit organization (www.karibuni.org).
