The modern city
It isn’t easy to reconcile the amazing legacy of Ancient Rome with the architectural creativity of the talented minds of modern designers. There are, however a few outstanding works that deserve your attention. Like the Nuvola (Cloud), the conference centre designed by the celebrated architect Massimiliano Fuksas in the EUR district, and the new Ara Pacis museum complex by architect Richard Meier. There is much more, of course, as your discovery journey into the modern side of Rome continues with a tour of the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the multifunctional masterpiece designed by Renzo Piano.

Roma underground & the Via Appia
There is a fascinating tour that should not be missed when you visit Rome. It begins with a walk over the ancient Via Appia – the ‘queen’ of roman roads lined with the Tomb of Cecilia Metella and other celebrated ruins – and leads to the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, an ancient underground burial site and later a sanctuary of martyrs, as well as destination of Christian pilgrimage from all over the Roman Empire. The catacombs are spread over four levels and slowly reveal the history of the city over the centuries through mysterious and intriguing niches, crypts, tiny basilicas and intersecting tunnels.
